When I Was A Kid

The wise men once said that “time waits for no man!” No one can ever recover a second when it flees away, no human is capable of doing that,
But I know if we had the power to halt time, most of us would prefer staying young till eternity!
I mean who wouldn’t love to stay under the care of his or her two loving parents? Being called nicknames of kadaddy or kamummy?
Why wouldn’t someone crave to stay young when all these benefits are involved? Crying whenever your favourite cartoon is scraped away,

Life was good then, I was being treated as a real prince, with all the royalty and numerous maidens around, untill the king decided to add another small pikini,
I was deprived off my “all-time favourite” title which now was wholesomely granted to my younger brother,
The attention and favour that I attracted when I was the only “last born” around, vanished away,
The master became the servant, “go bring me a spoon from the cupboard drawer, I want to feed your small brother, faster!” My mom’s high-pitched voice commanded,

These words would crush my ego into tiny pieces, with my wet eyes I would go with a heavy heart, that was the longest distance I ever walked since I was born!
After all this harsh treatment, I would wait until no one is keenly watching my steps and disappear like a ghost into my grandma’s compound, the beautiful land of hope,
There was a dry stream that separated our home from to our granny’s dwelling, a small seasonal river; I used to call it “the river between”
No, not the one talked by my favourite African writer Ngugi wa Thiong’o, that separated the two rival villages; Kameno and Makuyu in his phenomenal novel, “The River Between”
But a tunnel of hope, a secret underneath way to the land of fat meals, ‘Mwaitu‘ as we used to call her became my best friend,

I would pop up in her compound without any notification, and call her name, “Mwaitu ninooka ukukethya” grandma, I have come to greet you!
Her face would glitter like a diamond, she would receive me with her both hands, now I would feel at home,
I would volunteer to peel the cow peas as she went to cut fresh maize from the shamba for roasting, what a rich nation…
No one would touch me when Mwaitu was around! She was my favourite human being, from this context I can confidently say that “nothing beautiful comes with grey hair!” stay young if possible!

Isn’t the time of youth something special? There is nothing better than going back and diving into the memories of childhood, understanding as an older person now how special the love was all around – even if at times not fully understanding it as a young kid. But yes, time waits for no one 🙂 Beautifully written post ~ thank you.
